What is Vitamin C?

At this time of year particularly, many people realise the benefits of taking extra Vitamin C. But what exactly is it? What does it do? And why is Discovery Health Vitamin C so different...?

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is an essential water soluble vitamin that cannot be stored in the body. It must be adequately replaced daily.

Much of the Vitamin C in a meal may be excreted within a few hours. Unlike most other animals, we can't manufacture it in our body, so we have to get it every day in our food.

Vitamin C is unstable and is easily destroyed by heat and light. It is not always possible to be sure how much is in our diet. Our daily requirement is higher than for any other water soluble nutrient.

The processes of storing, peeling, freezing and cooking food can deplete much of its Vitamin C content.

Why are Vitamin C supplements necessary?

  • For producing collagen, a fibrous protein which is an integral part of healthy skin, tendons, bones, gums, teeth and blood vessels

  • As a protective antioxidant throughout the body via its role in reducing and removing harmful excess free radicals (pollution, heated fats etc.)

  • For maintaining a healthy immune system

  • For the growth and repair of tissue

  • In helping to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels.

  • For efficient body repair and maintenance.

  • For metabolising fat.

  • Who benefits from Vitamin C?

  • People whose diets contain little fresh fruit and vegetables

  • Those with particular nutritional requirements such as the elderly and people dependent on institutional catering.

  • Smokers and alcohol drinkers

  • Those with demanding lifestyles

  • Anyone wishing to maintain normal cholesterol levels

  • People who take aspirin or prescribed drugs such as antibiotics

  • Athletes and those whose work involves strenuous physical activity

  • Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids always accompany Vitamin C in fruit and vegetables. The main ones are the flavones and flavonals, rutin, citrin, hesperidin. They assist in the absorption of the Vitamin C and are particularly appropriate for

  • The elderly

  • Smokers and drinkers

  • Anyone on a low fresh fruit and vegetable diet

  • To help maintain peripheral circulation
